EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing. It is called this because it has been found that moving the eyes in a specific way can aid the processing of traumatic memories. During the therapy the therapist uses specific psychological interventions alongside eye movements to address distressing memories.
It is a relatively new therapy, but it has been found to be extremely effective in helping people recover from trauma.
Although EMDR was originally developed as an approach for psychological trauma, it has been further developed for problems such as phobias, anxiety disorders and for other stressful live events, such as bereavement and loss.
There are different levels of training in EMDR. I have completed level 3 of EMDR training and I am currently working towards EMDR accreditation.
